Match's Singles Events Bring Online Dating to the Real World
And they claim 1 in 2 people who attend meets someone.
Singles looking to meet and mingle have two basic options - bars and online dating - each with its own unique set of pros and cons.
The bar scene can feel sleazy, repetitive and disenchanting.
And online dating has the convenience factor but can feel overwhelming and sometimes deflating if the on screen chemistry never gets taken offline.
Match’s singles events combine these two in a casual setting for what they have found to be a very successful way to get singles together and let sparks fly.
“We believe we stand for real dating and for people to make authentic connections,” Abbie Oguntade, VP Northern European Region at Match.com UK, tells Marketing Week.
Match has been hosting these events since 2012, and they are now an integral part of what distinguishes Match from other dating sites.
Meet ups include free bar nights which take place in popular local venues. Some recent happy hours in London have been hosted at the Grand Union Farringdon and the swanky cocktail bar Komo.
There are also paid events which are more structured - salsa and bowling night, cooking classes and even weekend getaways.
The events are carefully designed with both social butterflies and wallflowers in mind.
If you’re a bit shy or out of practice, event hosts are present, with icebreakers on hand to get people talking. You can bring up to 3 friends if you need a wingman (or woman) to help calm your nerves.
Of course, there’s alcohol which always helps.
And the ease of knowing that everyone attending is in the same boat - looking to meet interesting singles who are ready for a lasting relationship - should help diminish some of the uneasiness of striking up a conversation with a stranger at a bar.
